In 1987, the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (also known as the Brundtland Commission) defined sustainability as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainability is often described as a stool composed of "three legs": the economy, the society and the environment. In higher education, this "stool" consists of advancing sustainable campus environmental practices, a sustainable academic curriculum, and making sure that we prepare students for "green careers" after graduation.
