On April 25, 2010, Coppin State University is proud to host the “Hats On For Dr. Dorothy I. Height Recognition Program” in honor of her lifelong dedication and outstanding contributions to advance civil rights and social justice both nationally and internationally. Because of her dedication and tireless efforts, major gains have been made in these areas, and the world is a much better place. Moreover, over the years, Dr. Height has remained a true friend and supporter of Coppin State University.
This year’s seminal event will serve to launch two major programs in her honor at Coppin State University: (1) The Dr. Dorothy I. Height Endowed Chair and Lectureship in Social Work and Social Justice, (2) The Dr. Dorothy I. Height Center for the Advancement of Social Justice. Named Chairs will serve to further Dr. Height’s humanitarian efforts and mission. Persons named as Chairs will be esteemed and nationally and/or internationally renowned educators, researchers and scholars who have demonstrated their commitment to promoting social change and social justice.
The Dr. Dorothy I. Height Center for the Advancement of Social Justice will help to expand the university’s social research capability, and extend its urban and community service traditions. It will also lead, promote, and support new and on-going efforts to address the practices and effect of social justice and environmental injustice locally and globally.
