Dehavilland Whitaker, Administrative Assistant

Dehavilland joined the Coppin State University family in early 2008 as the Academic Resource Center’s Administrative Assistant after retiring from the State of Maryland. She provides reception and administrative and clerical support to the Center. She serves as a link between the Center, CSU community, students, faculty, and staff.

Outside of the office, she enjoys spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is currently in her last two semesters pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.


Shirley Thomas, MS, M.Ed, Reading Center Coordinator

Shirley joined the Coppin State University staff over a decade ago as the Coordinator for the Reading Center. Her primary duties as coordinator include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Center including planning and coordinating programming, departmental collaborations, and supervision of professional and student tutors and one professional assistant coordinator. She has a passion for student learning and is committed to encouraging students.

Ms. Thomas has a Bachelors of Arts Degree and Holds two (2) Master's degrees; Master of Science (MS) in Professional Writing and a Master of Education M.Ed) in Reading Education.


John Barber, Ph.D., Assistant Reading Center Coordinator

A native of North Carolina, John Barber is a graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Coppin State University, and Walden University. He is a retired English Instructor, Language Arts Resource Facilitator, and Department Chair of the Baltimore City Public School System. He is an intricate part of the Academic Resource Center serving as Assistant Coordinator of the Reading Center and Adjunct Professor in the Humanities Department.

He is a firm believer that a good education will unlock any door and that all individuals can learn and reach any standard set before them. Coppin State University is the place for such to occur.

His professional affiliations include Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; National Council of Teachers of English; National/Maryland Writing Project and Douglas Memorial Community Church.

In his spare time, he enjoys reading contemporary novels and playing cards, especially Spades.

Michael Durant, Jr., MS.Ed, Ed.S, Study Skills Center Coordinator

Michael joined the Coppin State University family in April 2010 as the Study Skills Center Coordinator. His primary duties as coordinator include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Center including planning and coordinating programming, departmental collaborations, leadership development and supervision of professional, student tutors, and one professional assistant coordinator. He has a genuine commitment to positively influence students through mentorship and integrity.

Mr. Durant holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) in English Literature from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a Master of Science in Education Degree (MS.Ed) in Higher Education Administration from Middle Tennessee State University, and a Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S) from Middle Tennessee State University. Michael is currently pursuing his Doctorate Degree at Northeastern University.

His professional affiliations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society; Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society; Alpha Delta Pi Education Honors Society; Golden Key Honors Society; National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA); National Association of Minority Educators; American College Personnel Association (ACPA); and National Association of Multicultural Education.

Bryan Preston, BA, Assistant Writing Center Coordinator

Bryan joined the Coppin State University family in Early 2010 as the Assistant Coordinator for the Writing Center. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Brian graduated from The Towson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Professional Writing finishing fall 2010.

In addition to his academic pursuits and career at Coppin State University, he also provides Editorial Assistance for publications such as "Murderland" from Image Comics. He finds that his best experiences at the University are the times he works one on one with students. He will be assisting in producing the ARC newsletter for the 2010 2011 school year.
