What is the M.A.T. Program?The M.A.T. is a graduate degree program that leads to a license to teach (certification) in Maryland, and at least 33 other states in the nation. The program is designed for individuals holding a degree in arts and sciences and career changers. Previous experience or training in education is not required. Individuals who graduate with this degree are eligible for the Maryland State Teaching License in elementary/middle or secondary education.
I have a Bachelor’s degree, but it’s not in education. Can the M.A.T. program help me become a teacher?Yes, the M.A.T. program can help you become a teacher. Just look at the program objectives and see if it relates to your needs and interests. The M.A.T. objectives are as follows: To attract highly qualified individuals to enter the teaching profession. To increase the pool of qualified teachers (particularly in Maryland and the Baltimore metropolitan area) through an alternate rout to certification. To meet the needs of non-traditional prospective teachers who are career changers or liberal arts and sciences graduates interested in teaching as a career.
Okay. Now what are the requirements? In other words, who is eligible for the M.A.T. program?To be eligible for the M.A.T. program, you should meet the following requirements:Provide passing scores on the PRAXIS I examination. (Contact the Maryland State Department of Education for more information about this test). Possess at least a 3.0 on the undergraduate transcript of the last 60 graduate or undergraduate credits. Provide scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Provide all information required for admission to the School of Graduate Studies (410) 951-3090.
How much time will it take me to complete the M.A.T. program? The program requires a minimum of forty-six (46) credit hours in elementary/middle and forty (40) credit hours in the secondary education concentrations, respectively. Students who take 6 credits per semester (including summer sessions) or 18 credits per year may complete the program in approximately three (3) years. Pre-requisite coursework and required coursework not included in the program, as well as PRAXIS I & II may extend program completion time.
Is financial aid available?Applicants and currently enrolled students may contact the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Institutional Advancement for information on financial aid. The Maryland Higher Education Commission, State Scholarship Administration (410) 260-4500 also provides a variety of financial aid programs. Finally, students (Maryland residents) seeking financial should contact their state Senator or Delegate for information on Senatorial Scholarships.
